Do you want to know how to get rid of referral spam?
It’s easy if you follow us here and use the tools we provide you.
This month’s version of our referral denial list has a lot of new ones. What we seem to see are lots of sites that hire supposed SEO companies to get them traffic and hits. They get this from the duped site administrators who go to see what has been said and why someone comes from the site.
Look, there is no one home! If you have good tracking you can see dozens of sites hitting you, but all of them from the same IP at the same time. Mostly I find Russian and Ukraine IP numbers doing this. Who knows if the culprits use proxy servers or whatever.
Since many of these sites are just people setting up their blog or business I assume they do not know how their SEO people are working. It is really black hat and really bad for them and for you.
What the deny files we provide do is stop the referrals from known sites that have no useful links back to you. I go to each site, not from the log files, but typing in the URL. So not only do I see the sites but know they are not linking anything. Sometimes I do not have to go when I see that a set of sites is being “referred” by the same IP. That is a sure sign some “company” is sending spoofed information.
So, we save you the work. If you like you can visit the sites and see, but then you gave them the traffic they hire these bogus firms for.
Anyway, here is the first installment of the SMALT DENY text file. Just place it in your .htaccess file before your site is called and see how nice your stats get. You have less hits, but you will actually start seeing sites that REALLY link to you. That is well worth the effort.
