One Drive, Google Drive, Drop Box Explained and Exposed
Microsoft’s One Drive,
which Cloud Storage is the question?
Which is better,
which is cheaper,
which gives you what you want?
As with any review of options much of the fact surrounding your use has to be considered. This review is more concerned with the fact that none of these offerings is giving you much for your money and their terms and conditions include that you are giving away all privacy and allowing the various companies to use your data for advertising or “for third party use.”
It remains a fact that once you use these services you are hooked in for a year and at a fee that is about $1.99 per month for online storage of up to 100g as of this writing. Mostly they will give you about 20g for that price.
While Microsoft can offer seamless use of their online program offerings with the one drive storage this comes at a much higher yearly cost. For about $100 you can get a years access to Office and 60g of storage. Does that sound nice?
Well, I just think it is a bit absurd. The fact that Microsoft wants to get people to subscribe forever to the Office suite instead of having the software forever at a single purchase price is a bit shameless. Why? Well if you bought the complete office suite 16 years ago you can still use all the facilities on your own computer. If you went to the “free” upgrade to Windows 10 you can still use everything except their mail program, Outlook. Explaining that travesty will have to wait for its’ own article. But the basic functionality of Word, Access, and Excel are still working. I have it right here on my computer running Windows 10.
Do the math:
If I paid $350 for the software and used it for 16 years and still going I spent about $21 dollars a year for the use of the software and it still works. So why would I want to start paying yearly $100? That would mean $1600 for that same software.
There is a benefit to using the online software, to be sure. You can access the programs with any device anywhere. But the data could be accessed with locally run programs too just using the storage.
This all leads me to outline why these “Cloud Storage” are all just scams.
The reality of “Cloud Computing” is that it is just a server in a huge server farm and you get a portion of a disk. Microsoft has their servers in the same place as all the other major companies, not in their own facility under Microsoft control. Same as Google. They all hook into the Internet at various central offices owned by the likes of Level3.
When you read the Terms of Service you can see that you give up any privacy and your data is now their data to do whatever they please including sharing it with third parties and any law enforcement of any kind. So in fact that great photo of the birthday party for your kids can be used by a third party to promote their product offerings, the government can use it to see if you do enough for your children, the advertising agencies can use to focus more family goods to you and those you have on your account. You open a huge can of worms. It is worse than those salesmen calling at diner time to sell you junk you don’t need.
Well, the issue for me is I know an alternative that I have been using for years. It is called web hosting. Hosting on a server and accessing it like a folder on my desktop. Isn’t that what One Drive is supposed to be?
So why aren’t you using web hosting facilities yourself?
You can get a domain name easily anywhere, or perhaps you have one. Well, if you have a cpanel hosting account you may already have the ability to access your online domain from your desktop.
For $47.40 a year you can have un metered bandwidth and disk space with your hosting account. You can have unlimited FTP accounts, you can set up a web server and make a WordPress site, you can have your own web mail, pop mail, or IMAP support for multiple devices, so much. In fact just about everything you do online now can be your own personal domain. But if you ONLY want something like Microsoft’s’ One Drive or Google Drive or drop box, you are so much better off with your own Cloud Server.
Okay, now I am going to tell you about how to go about getting all the services you could ever need with your own branded domain name and end the loss of your privacy to the major offerings from the guys who sell your data. Each of these offerings has links to the products and I have gone through them to give you the best out there at this time. Each link has affiliate codes to give me a commission on any sale you take part in by using them. I just want you to know that before I get started because this is one way I can make some money to spend the time finding the information and writing about it for everyone here. You can always go directly to these companies and bypass my commission but you do not get better pricing, you only assure that I earn nothing for my time getting this information to you.
So, my all time favorite hosting service is Hostgator. I have had numerous accounts with them for over a decade and their support is miles ahead of any one else. I can’t remember any downtimes ever and any issue I had with software was quickly answered.
Hostgator is also the one offering the $47.40 a year for a single domain hosted with all the facilities you can imagine for hosting. Now if you remember what I said above, hosting is what Cloud is all about. So you can use this service to put a folder on your desktop that is the drive on the server in the “Cloud.” You can build that folder on all your devices. You can access the drive from anywhere! Plus you have unlimited email accounts, FTP accounts, etc. So now you can upload a file, give a friend an FTP account to access that file and they can get it from anywhere! Have your own email address without giving up rights to it! So can you pass this by? So why pay such high fees for much less?
Wait; if you do not have a domain name you have a vast trove of domains that can easily be found from Win Your Dot Com. You do not need to have a .com domain since the best names are usually already owned, but you can choose from a variety of interesting second level domain names. You could be yourname.guru, .tips, .online, or .company or any of 77 other new second level domain names. All work just like the big guy .com domain names! We use the WinYour to manage our domain names and name servers. They also offer hosting and other services. Their pricing at around $34.92 a year to host the website and 100 gig of storage is not bad.
So rather than hand over your rights and privacy to the likes of Microsoft and Google, think about doing things your self. Control your own information, cut the costs, add more facilities and become independent and secure in your own services.
Good luck out there!
